SPECIALTIES

Manual Therapy
Specific techniques to help restore joint range of motion and decrease pain.
[ more ]

Manual therapy is one of the many tools utilized by the physical therapists at ProFormance Rehab for treating joint and muscle dysfunction. The therapists all have training based in the North American Institute of Manual Therapy (NAIOMT). NAIOMT offers continuing education and certification in their program of evaluation and treatment techniques.

The concepts are based on thorough evaluation of joints of the spine, arms, and legs, and treatment techniques designed to restore normal joint range of motion, decrease pain, and allow improved ability to perform desired activities. The manual techniques are followed up with both strengthening exercises to create and maintain stability, and stretching exercises to maintain the appropriate motions.

Abdominal and Lumbar Stabilization
A systematic and comprehensive strengthening program for your trunk and core musculature.
[ more ]

ProFormance Rehab is well known for its rehabilitation program involving strengthening for the core musculature of the abdominal and lumbar areas. "The Core" is a concept that has been popularized in the latest fitness trends of yoga and Pilates. At ProFormance, we are focused on an advanced concept of core strengthening with the combination of muscle activation techniques and reinforcement exercises that allow us to further the stabilization process. We start with the base muscles of transversus abdominis in the lower abdominal region and the multifidus in the lower back and ensure that these muscles are strong. The pelvic floor and diaphragm muscles are also incorporated into the core. If not, muscle activation techniques are used to increase their recruitment abilities. These techniques are followed up with gentle strengthening exercises. Once these muscles are working then Phase 1 stabilization exercises can be started. These are the lowest level of exercises and are based on developing the abilities to use these muscles functionally. The Phase 2 and 3 exercises are progressively more difficult and challenging. They are incorporated into the program as soon as the lower level activities are mastered. The Phase 3 exercises are more functionally oriented, and are easily transitioned into sport-specific training and work simulation tasks.

Custom Orthotics/Biomechanical Evaluation
A thorough evaluation process, custom foot casting, and fabrication of orthotics.
[ more ]

Orthotic therapy is utilized when there is a significant biomechanical situation that cannot be adequately supported by the muscular system or with footwear alone. Here at ProFormance, we will work with your muscular system to optimize its function and supporting role. A thorough biomechanical evaluation will be completed to look at your individual situation. We will work with you and recommend over-the-counter devices and appropriate footwear for you, when this is appropriate. If these attempts are not successful, or you have already exhausted these avenues, we will take you through the custom orthotics process. This starts with created a negative cast impression of your foot using plaster. The casts are sent to a orthotist who will build your customized orthotics based on the specifications found in your evaluation. We will fit you with your orthotics here at ProFormance Rehab. You will gradually increase your wear time and we will make modifications as necessary. Orthotic therapy is best understood as one component of an overall care approach, and not the whole treatment. Exercises designed to build strength and flexibility are also a vital part of the process.

Video Analysis
Utilization of video to look closely at your biomechanics during activity using slow motion and stop action features for both diagnostic and training purposes.
[ more ]

We have equipment to perform complete video analysis of any activity. We often use this tool to closely examine fine details of a patient's mechanics while performing the tasks of their sport, work tasks, or activities of daily living. Video allows us to slow down the activities and study frame by frame the human biomechanics of the activities, and to identify weaknesses or biomechanical faults that may be missed during observation in real time. We often use the video analysis as an educational tool with our patients to help them better understand movement patterns and what we can do to help them achieve their goals.
